West Coast Swing is een dans, ontstaan uit Lindy Hop, de dans die ontstond in de Savoy Ballroom in Harlem, een wijk van New York Andere dansstijlen die ook uit Lindy Hop zijn ontstaan zijn o.a.: Rock & Roll, Boogie Woogie, de Jitterbug, Jive.
Lindy Hop is een jazzdans die je met een partner danst, gebaseerd op een combinatie van de Charleston en Tapdance. Deze dansvormen waren vooral in de jaren 1920/30 razend populair in de VS, waar de dans is ontstaan.
Lindy Hop wordt gedanst op swing-muziek uit die tijd. Bekende swing-artiesten zijn Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong en Ella Fitzgerald. Lindy Hop is vooral een improvisatiedans.
Lindy Hop is een authentieke Afro-Euro-Amerikaanse swingdans die voortborduurt op Afrikaanse en Europese danstradities.
Lindy Hop verspreidde zich vanuit de VS snel over de hele wereld. In de jaren 1930 maakten de blanken zich de dans eigen en noemden het Jitterbug. Vanaf toen evolueerde de swingdans in vele vormen, zoals West Coast Swing, Rock & Roll, Jive en Boogie Woogie.
In de jaren 50 bekend als Western Swing, werd de naam WCS voor het eerst in 1962 officieel gebruikt en vanaf 1980 werd de WCS populair en in 1988 werd de WCS tot officiële dans van Californie uitgeroepen.
Dean Collins, een beroemde performer en dansdocent uit die tijd, heeft een invloedrijke rol gehad bij de ontwikkeling en ontstaan van de WCS in zijn huidige vorm.
De populariteit inde jaren negentig nam alleen maar toe en vanaf toen werden er al wedstrijden en congressen georganiseerd.
Sinds een paar jaar raakt europa in de ban van de WCS.
In mei 2010 is het eerste WCS congres en danswedstrijden in Parijs.
